Marco Benevento

Postdoc

I am Marco Benevento and I work as postdoctoral researcher in the Harkany lab since December 2017.

I graduated in the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ in collaboration with European Brain Research Institute (EBRI) ‘Rita Levi Montalcini’ under the supervision of Dr. H. Marie. In the Marie lab, I studied the effects of manipulating the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) directly in the dentate gyrus (DG) in both fear memory formation and extinction.

Later, I completed my PhD in the laboratory of Dr. Nael Nadif Kasri at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior within the Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. My focus during my doctoral studies was to understand how histone modifications affect synaptic function and behavior. For this, I used both murine and human models that recapitulate an autistic spectrum disease named Kleefstra syndrome.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Harkany lab, my research goal is to study how glia cells and neurons communicate. In particular, I am focusing in the hypothalamic ventricular region where to a specialized glia type, namely tanycytes, regulate neuronal function, and viceversa.
